Now Israel's largest Arab city, Nazareth was the place of the Annunciation and so is a major site of Christian pilgrimage.

Nazareth is the capital and the largest city in the Northern District of Israel. The inhabitants are predominately Arabs, almost all of whom are either Muslim or Christian. Nazareth Illit (lit. "Upper Nazareth") is built alongside old Nazareth, and has a sizable a Jewish population. In the New Testament, the city is described as the childhood home of Jesus, and as such is a center of Christian pilgrimage, with many shrines commemorating biblical events.
