Khon Kaen is a regional center for education, financial institutions, government offices, industry, agriculture, and transportation in the northeastern region. Many Buddhist temples are in Khon Kaen, notably Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon, also known as Wat Nong Wang. Phitsanulok

Thailand, Central Thailand region

HistoricCulture1 nightWed. Feb 12 - Thu. Feb 13

One of Thailand's oldest cities dates to the 14C, boasting fascinating temples, ancient architecture, historic museums, and markets.

Phitsanulok is an important, historic city in lower northern Thailand and is the capital of Phitsanulok Province, which stretches all the way to the Laotian border. Phitsanulok is one of the oldest cities in Thailand, founded over 600 years ago. Phitsanulok's main tourist attraction is Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat, known locally simply as Wat Yai. This famous temple, built in 1357, is home to the Phra Buddha Chinnarat, which is one of the most revered Buddha figures in Thailand, and the official symbol of Phitsanulok Province. The Buddha Chinnarat National Museum, on the temple grounds, houses a sizeable collection of Sukhothai period art. A large fair is held at the temple every January.

Sukhothai

Thailand, Central Thailand region

HistoricCulture0 nightsThu. Feb 13

A small town set in easy distance from the historic capital of the 14C Sukhothai Kingdom, where nearly 200 temples await visitors.

Sukhothai was the capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom. Sukhothai is 12 km west of the modern city of New Sukhothai. Sukhothai was the capital of the Thai Empire for approximately 140 years. As of 2014, 193 temples have been excavated and partly reconstructed. The stele of Ram Khamhaeng states the city had a triple wall and four gates. The Aranyika monastery was west of the city, a great lake to the east, a market to the north, and the Khao Luang hill to the south. Old Sukhothai is a quiet town with almost no hotels. Most visitors stay in New Sukhothai or in the nearby city of Phitsanulok, which has numerous hotels and restaurants and is on the rail line.

Lampang

Thailand, Northern Thailand region

1 nightThu. Feb 13 - Fri. Feb 14

This town offers several cultural landmarks, easy access to nearby tourist hubs, and beautiful surrounding nature.

Lampang, also called Nakhon Lampang to differentiate from Lampang Province, is the third largest town in northern Thailand. The city is still growing rapidly as trading and transportation center. It offers much of the historic interest of Lanna as well as Chiang Mai, but without the overt commercialization. In the heart of the north, Lampang is also a good base for excursions and travel within northern Thailand. Tourists typically stop by for lunch and visit the more famous attractions such as Wat Phra That Lampang Luang and the Thai Elephant Conservation Center , among several other attractions.
