Inveraray

United Kingdom, Scotland region

NatureBeachesSmall towns1 nightFri. Sep 04 - Sat. Sep 05

Picturesquely situated on the banks of Loch Fyne, this lovely town offers its visitors a calm atmosphere and notable historic sites.

Inveraray is a royal burgh in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It is on the western shore of Loch Fyne, near its head. In 1744 the third Duke of Argyll decided to demolish the existing castle and start from scratch with a new building. The castle was 40 years in construction. The end product was not a castle in the traditional sense, but a classic Georgian mansion house on a grand scale, Inveraray Castle. In addition to the castle, the Georgian Inveraray Jail in the burgh is now a museum. Other attractions include the Argyll Folk Museum at Auchindrain. The Celtic Inveraray Cross can also been seen in the town.

Fort William

United Kingdom, Scotland region

NatureActiveSmall towns1 nightSat. Sep 05 - Sun. Sep 06

One of the largest towns in Scotland's Highlands, this busy town boasts museums, warm locals, and access to stunning nature.

Fort William is the second largest settlement in the Highlands of Scotland with around 10,000 inhabitants — and the largest town: only the city of Inverness is larger. Fort William is a major tourist center, with Glen Coe just to the south, Aonach Mor to the east and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles. It is a center for hillwalking and climbing due to its proximity to Ben Nevis and many other Munro mountains. It is also known for its nearby downhill mountain bike track. It is the start/end of both the West Highland Way (Milngavie-Fort William) and the Great Glen Way (a walk/cycle way Fort William-Inverness). Around 726 people (7.33% of the population) can speak Gaelic.

Isle of Skye

United Kingdom, Scotland region

NatureActive2 nightsSun. Sep 06 - Tue. Sep 08

One of the Inner Hebrides Islands, Skye boasts unsurpassed beauty in its stark landscapes and coastal scenery.

Skye or the Isle of Skye is the largest and most northerly major island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. The island's peninsulas radiate from a mountainous center dominated by the Cuillins, the rocky slopes of which provide some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the country. The island has been occupied since the Mesolithic period and its history includes a time of Norse rule and a long period of domination by Clan MacLeod and Clan Donald. The main industries are tourism, agriculture, fishing and forestry. The island's largest settlement is Portree, known for its picturesque harbour. There are links to various nearby islands by ferry and, since 1995, to the mainland by a road bridge.

Pitlochry

United Kingdom, Scotland region

NatureActive1 nightWed. Sep 09 - Thu. Sep 10

Pitlochry retained many of its Victorian buildings and characteristics, while its surrounding mountains offer fine hiking trails.

Pitlochryis largely a Victorian town, which developed into a tourist resort because of Queen Victoria visiting the area in 1842 and the arrival of the railway in 1863. It remains a popular tourist resort today and is particularly known as a centre for hillwalking, surrounded by mountains such as Ben Vrackie and Schiehallion. It is popular as a base for coach holidays. The town has retained many stone Victorian buildings, and the main street has an unusual period cast iron canopy over one side. The town has two whisky distilleries, whose visitor centres are popular attractions: Edradour, which is the smallest legal distillery in Scotland, and Blair Athol Distillery, which dates back to 1798.
