Tel Aviv

Israel, Central region

Israel's second largest city boasts world-class museums, incredible cuisine, stunning beaches, and the country's best nightlife.

Tel Aviv as a new city was founded in 1909 by Jewish immigrants on the outskirts of the ancient port city of Jaffa. The modern city's first neighborhoods had already been established in 1886, the first being Neve Tzedek. Immigration by mostly Jewish refugees meant that the growth of Tel Aviv soon outpaced Jaffa's, which had a majority Arab population at the time. Tel Aviv and Jaffa were merged into a single municipality in 1950, two years after the establishment of the State of Israel. Tel Aviv's White City, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003, comprises the world's largest concentration of International Style buildings (Bauhaus and other related modernist architectural styles).

A most idyllic town overlooking the sea, Patmos and its namesake island are rife with ancient history and natural beauty.

Patmos is a small Greek island in the Aegean Sea. In 1999, the island's historic center Chora, along with the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian and the Cave of the Apocalypse, were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Patmos is mentioned in the Bible Book of Revelation. The book's introduction states that its author, John, was on Patmos when he was given (and recorded) a vision from Jesus. As such, Patmos is a destination for Christian pilgrimage. Visitors can see the cave where John is said to have received his Revelation.

On an island of the same name rests this fortified town, home to fine architecture, beaches, and interesting historic remnants.

The old city is surrounded by walls, and the streets are arranged in a herringbone pattern allowing free circulation of air but protecting against strong winds.[2] Korčula is tightly built on a promontory that guards the narrow sound between the island and the mainland. Building outside the walls was forbidden until the 18th century, and the wooden drawbridge was only replaced in 1863. All of Korčula's narrow streets are stepped with the notable exception of the street running alongside the southeastern wall. The street is called the Street of Thoughts as one did not have to worry about the steps.
