There are more than 250 different languages spoken in Sydney and about one-third of residents speak a language other than English at home.

Auckland also has the largest Polynesian population of any city in the world. In Maori, Auckland's name is Tamaki Makaurau and the adaptation of Auckland, to suit Maori phonetic rules, is Akarana.
