Nagoya

Japan, Chubu region

CultureFoodNight life2 nightsSun. Apr 19 - Tue. Apr 21

A thriving metropolis full of history, Nagoya is best known for its cultural wealth, including theaters, museums, and shrines.

Nagoya is the largest city in the Chubu region of Japan. Nagoya was a major trading city and political seat of the Owari lords, the most important house of the Tokugawa clan. They encouraged trade and the arts under their patronage, especially Tokugawa Muneharu who took a keen interest in drama and plays and lived lavishly. Under his rule, actors and actresses began to visit Nagoya. Arts and culture was further supported by the city's wealthy merchants. During World War II many old buildings and artefacts were destroyed. The region's economic and financial power in the post-war years rekindled the artistic and cultural scene.

Kyoto

Japan, Kansai region

CultureFoodHistoricNight life3 nightsTue. Apr 21 - Fri. Apr 24

The capital of Imperial Japan for a whole millennium, the charming Kyoto is full of museums, cultural monuments, castles, and parks.

Kyoto is a city located in the central part of the island of Honshu, Japan. Formerly the Imperial capital of Japan for more than one thousand years, it is now the capital city of Kyoto Prefecture located in the Kansai region, as well as a major part of the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe metropolitan area. Kyoto is also known as the thousand-year capital. Although archaeological evidence suggests human settlement in Kyoto began as early as the Paleolithic period, relatively little is known about human activity in the area before the 6th century AD, around which time the Shimogamo Shrine is believed to have been established.

A bustling urban center, Osaka blends Japanese innovation with ancient traditions, and offers superb culinary experiences.

Osaka has a large number of wholesalers and retail shops. The stores along the arcade include commodities, clothing, and catering outlets. Osaka is known for its food, in Japan and abroad and its fine sake, which is made with fresh water from the prefecture's mountains. Osaka's culinary prevalence is the result of a location that has provided access to high quality ingredients, a high population of merchants, and proximity to the ocean and waterway trade. In recent years, Osaka has started to garner more attention from foreigners with the increased popularity of cooking and dining in popular culture.

Originally a castle town, this city is home to historic landmarks including its iconic castle, temples, and a botanical garden.

Himeji has been the center of Harima Province since Nara period. After the Battle of Sekigahara, Ikeda Terumasa received a fief at Harima Province and established the Himeji Domain.
