Rothenburg is well known for its well-preserved medieval old town. It is part of the popular Romantic Road through southern Germany. In 1170 the city of Rothenburg was founded at the time of the building of Staufer Castle. In October 1631, during the Thirty Years' War, the Count of Tilly, wanted to quarter his 40,000 troops in Rothenburg. Rather than allow entrance, the town defended itself. However, Tilly's troops quickly defeated Rothenburg. and in 1634 the Black Death killed many more townsfolk. Without any money or power, Rothenburg stopped growing, thus preserving its 17th-century state. sites include The Criminal Museum, Imperial City Museum and the Rathaus (town hall).

Bamberg is a town in Bavaria, Germany. Its historic city center is a listed UNESCO world heritage site, primarily because of its authentic medieval appearance. The Bamberg cathedral is a late Romanesque building with four grand towers. It was founded in 1004. It was later partially destroyed by fire in 1081. The new cathedral was consecrated in 1111 and in the 13th century received its present late-Romanesque form. Of its many historic works of art may be mentioned the magnificent marble tomb of the founder and his wife, carved between 1499 and 1513. Another treasure of the cathedral is an equestrian statue known as the Bamberg Horseman, This statue dates to approximately 1200.

While commonly associated with the Third Reich, Nuremberg's history begins in the 11C, thus offering a wealth of varied sites.

Nuremberg was, according to the first documentary mention of the city in 1050, the location of a roman Imperial castle and is often referred to as having been the 'unofficial capital' of the Holy Roman Empire. Alberobello is a small town and commune in the province of Bari, in Puglia, Italy. It has about 11,000 inhabitants and is famous for its unique trulli constructions. The Trulli of Alberobello are part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites list since 1996. The abundance of calcareous sedimentary material in the area lead to the building of houses with dry stone without the use of mortar. These houses were the first trulli which contributed to the expansion of the settlement. Building the houses of dry stone was a requirement of Count Giangirolamo II as this way it was avoidable to pay taxes on them.

Piazza di Roma is the largest open space in the old city, with a green space in the center of a largely triangular grass pattern, facing the 17th century Palazzo Ducale.
