Goreme

Turkey, Central Anatolia region

HistoricNatureActiveSmall towns2 nightsWed. Oct 23 - Fri. Oct 25

Beautifully situated among fantastical rocky peaks, the small, laid-back town of Goreme has a unique, otherworldly feel.

Goreme, located among the "fairy chimney" rock formations, is a town in Cappadocia, a historical region of Turkey. The time that the Goreme was first settled is unclear, but it could date back as the Hittite era, between 1800 and 1200 B.C. The location was central between rivaling empires, such as the Greeks and Persians. During the Roman era, the area became home to Christians retreating from Rome. Its main sights include the Ortahane, Durmus Kadir, Yusuf Koc and Bezirhane churches, in addition to the richly decorated Tokali Kilise, the Apple Church, and a number of homes and pigeon houses carved straight into the rock formations in the town.

Because of its natural strategic position on a small peninsula into the Mediterranean Sea below the Taurus Mountains, Alanya has been a local stronghold for many Mediterranean-based empires. Alanya's greatest political importance came in the Middle Ages, with the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum under the rule of Alaeddin Kayqubad I, whose building campaign resulted in many of the city's landmarks, such as the Red Tower, Shipyard, and Alanya Castle. Other landmarks are Alanya Gardens, Aquapark, Archeology Museum, and the Damlatas Caves.

Turkey's largest Mediterranean coastal city is home to some of the country's finest beaches, and is dotted with historic sites.

Antalya is the eighth most populous city in Turkey and the capital of its eponymous province. Located on Anatolia's flourishing southwest coast bordered by the Taurus Mountains, Antalya is the largest Turkish city on the Mediterranean coast. Roman rule saw Antalya thrive, including the construction of new monuments, such as Hadrian's Gate. Kaleici, with its narrow cobbled streets of historic Ottoman era houses, is the old center of Antalya. With its hotels, bars, clubs, restaurants, and shopping, it has been restored to retain much of its historical character. There are also archaeological sites with traces of Lycian, Pamphylian, Roman, and Byzantine architecture and cultures.
