Monte Carlo (literally "Mount Charles") is situated on a prominent escarpment at the base of the Maritime Alps along the French Riviera. Near the western end of the quarter is the world-famous Place du Casino, the gambling center which has made Monte Carlo "an international byword for the extravagant display and reckless dispersal of wealth".

Museums and art galleries are everywhere in the city. The Palace of Nations, home of the United Nations headquarters, can also be visited.

In 1147, the Crusaders reconquered the city and since then it has been a major political, economic and cultural centre of Portugal. Lisbon enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Among all the metropolises in Europe, it has the warmest winters.
