The capital of Portugal, Lisbon is a lively city filled with restaurants, shops, buzzing nightlife, and historical sites.

Lisbon is the capital and the largest city of Portugal. Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries. Julius Caesar made it a municipium called Felicitas Julia, adding to the name Olissipo. Ruled by a series of Germanic tribes from the 5th century, it was captured by the Moors in the 8th century. In 1147, the Crusaders reconquered the city and since then it has been a major political, economic and cultural centre of Portugal. Lisbon enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Set on a hilltop, this city combines modern cultural venues, traditional local architecture and remnants of its Roman heritage.

The castle on top of the hill can be seen from afar and dominates the town. Built, together with the town walls in 13C, it consists of battlement walls, square corner towers, and a central granite and marble keep, with its height of 40 m the highest in Portugal. The castle now houses a small military museum. The whitewashed church of Santo Amaro, standing next to the castle, is one of just four pre-Romanesque churches left in Portugal. Some parts date from the 6th century. Museu da Rainha D. Leonor, a regional museum was established in 1927 in the former 15C convent Our Lady of the Conception, gradually expanding its collection.

Famous for its wine, Portugal's second largest city boasts a lovely waterfront and several historical sites and monuments.

Porto is the second-largest city in Portugal, after Lisbon, and one of the major urban areas in Southern Europe. Porto is one of the oldest European centres, and registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Its settlement dates back many centuries, when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire. Its Latin name, Portus Cale has been referred to as the origin for the name "Portugal", based on transliteration and oral evolution from Latin. One of Portugal's internationally famous exports, port wine, is named for Porto, since the metropolitan area, and in particular the adegas of Vila Nova de Gaia, were responsible for the production and export of the fortified wine.
