Calais

France, Nord-Pas-De-Calais region

0 nightsThu. Jul 30

Linked to England through rail and ferry route, this pleasant town is full of landmarks, lovely architecture, and rich museums.

Calais is a town and major ferry port in northern France in the department of Pas-de-Calais. Calais overlooks the Strait of Dover, the narrowest point in the English Channel, which is only 34km wide here, and is the closest French town to England. The White Cliffs of Dover can easily be seen on a clear day from Calais. The old part of the town, Calais proper (known as Calais-Nord), is situated on an artificial island surrounded by canals and harbors. The modern part of the town, St-Pierre, lies to the south and south-east. In the center of the old town is the Place d'Armes, in which stands the Tour du Guet, or watch-tower. Today, Calais is visited by more than 10 million tourists annually.

HistoricSmall townsCultureFood2 nightsSun. Aug 02 - Tue. Aug 04

Troyes is a seemingly endless display of art, complimented by at least 10 churches with stained glass from the 12C to the 20C.

Troyes is a commune in north-central France. It is located on the Seine river about 150 km southeast of Paris. This area is known as the Champagne region of Northern France. Many half-timbered houses survive in the old town. Troyes has been in existence since the Roman era, as Augustobona Tricassium, which stood at the hub of numerous highways, primarily the Via Agrippa. Not having suffered from the last wars, Troyes has a high density of old religious buildings grouped close to the city center.

The 16C ramparts and homes of this village are enjoyable to tour, while drinking some of the best wine from the Alsace vineyards.

Riquewihr is a commune in Alsace in north-eastern France. A popular tourist attraction for its historical architecture, Riquewihr is also known for the Riesling and other great wines produced in the village. Riquewihr looks today more or less as it did in the 16th century. Riquewihr was one of the few towns in the area not to be badly damaged during World War II. The town is surrounded by its medieval fortifications and is overlooked by a castle from the same period that is today a museum. There is a museum about Alsace during World War II and a torture chamber. The village is a member of the Les Plus Beaux Villages de France ("The most beautiful villages of France") association.

Surrounded by vineyards, Epernay is the Capital of Champagne and a good base to explore the Marne Valley.

Epernay is a commune in the Marne department in northern France. The town sits on the left bank of the Marne at the extremity of the Cubry valley which crosses it. In the central and oldest quarter of the town, the streets are narrow and irregular; the surrounding suburbs, however, are modern and more spacious. One of its churches retains a portal and stained-glass windows from the sixteenth century, but the other public buildings are of modern construction. The most famous street in Epernay is the Avenue de Champagne which features the leading Champagne manufacturers.
