Since its foundation in the early 14th century, Bilbao was a commercial hub that enjoyed significant importance. Nowadays, Bilbao is a vigorous service city that is experiencing an ongoing social, economic, and aesthetic revitalisation process, started by the iconic Bilbao Guggenheim Museum. Bilbao's buildings display a variety of architectural styles, ranging from gothic to contemporary architecture. The Old Town features many of the oldest buildings in the city, as the St. James' Cathedral or the Church of San Anton.

A city with unique architecture made of pinkish terracotta bricks, which earned it the nickname la Ville Rose ("the Pink City"), Toulouse counts two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Canal du Midi (designated in 1996 and shared with other cities), and the Basilica of St. Sernin, the largest remaining Romanesque building in Europe. Its world-renowned university is one of the oldest in Europe (founded in 1229) and, with more than 103,000 students, is the fourth-largest university campus of France.

Calais is a town and major ferry port in northern France in the department of Pas-de-Calais. Calais overlooks the Strait of Dover, the narrowest point in the English Channel, which is only 34km wide here, and is the closest French town to England. The White Cliffs of Dover can easily be seen on a clear day from Calais. The old part of the town, Calais proper (known as Calais-Nord), is situated on an artificial island surrounded by canals and harbors. The modern part of the town, St-Pierre, lies to the south and south-east. In the center of the old town is the Place d'Armes, in which stands the Tour du Guet, or watch-tower. Today, Calais is visited by more than 10 million tourists annually.

Plymouth is a city on the south coast of Devon, England. It is situated between the mouths of the rivers Plym and Tamar. The Royal Citadel was built in 1666 on the east end of Plymouth Hoe. Smeaton's Tower, built in 1759 as a lighthouse, the top two thirds rebuilt on the Hoe in 1877. It has views over the Plymouth Sound and the city. The early port settlement of Plymouth, called "Sutton" has 100 listed buildings and the largest concentration of cobbled streets in Britain. Also on Sutton Pool is the National Marine Aquarium which displays 400 marine species and includes Britain's deepest aquarium tank. A mile upstream is the Saltram estate, which has a Jacobean and Georgian mansion.
