Bern is the capital and the fourth most populous city in Switzerland. Bern's city centre is largely medieval and is recognised by UNESCO as a Cultural World Heritage Site. Its most famous sight is the Zytglogge, a medieval clock tower with moving puppets. It also has a 15C Gothic cathedral and a 15C town hall. Thanks to 6km of arcades, the town boasts 1 of the longest covered shopping promenades in Europe. Since 16C, the city has a bear pit to house its heraldic animals. The Federal Palace, built 1857-1902 can also be visited. The Rose Garden is a Rosarium on a hill, converted into a park from a former cemetery. There are Renaissance allegorical statues on public fountains in the Old Town.

The beach is roughly seven kilometres (4.3 miles) from the city, and consists of a long sandy spit reached through a bridge The city has a public university, an international airport, a seaport, a marina, a railway station and complete inter-regional bus services. Its 30,000-seater stadium was one of the venues of the Euro 2004 and is also the temporary home ground of the Gibraltar national football team. The stadium is also used for concerts, festivals and other events.

Lisbon is the capital and the largest city of Portugal. Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries. Julius Caesar made it a municipium called Felicitas Julia, adding to the name Olissipo. Ruled by a series of Germanic tribes from the 5th century, it was captured by the Moors in the 8th century. In 1147, the Crusaders reconquered the city and since then it has been a major political, economic and cultural centre of Portugal. Lisbon enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Among all the metropolises in Europe, it has the warmest winters.
