Portugal, Lisbon region

The capital of Portugal, Lisbon is a lively city filled with restaurants, shops, buzzing nightlife, and historical sites.

Lisbon is the capital and the largest city of Portugal. Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries. Julius Caesar made it a municipium called Felicitas Julia, adding to the name Olissipo. Ruled by a series of Germanic tribes from the 5th century, it was captured by the Moors in the 8th century. In 1147, the Crusaders reconquered the city and since then it has been a major political, economic and cultural centre of Portugal. Lisbon enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Among all the metropolises in Europe, it has the warmest winters.

Caceres

Spain, Extremadura region

Small townsHistoricFoodCultureNight life1 night

This lovely city has admirably preserved its history, but also boasts a modern atmosphere and many cultural activities.

Caceres is the capital of Caceres province, in the autonomous community of Extremadura, Spain. The Old Town still has its ancient walls; this part of town is also well known for its multitude of storks' nests. The walls contain a medieval town setting with no outward signs of modernity. Caceres was declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO in 1986 because of the city's blend of Roman, Moorish, Northern Gothic and Italian Renaissance architecture. Thirty towers from the Islamic period still stand in Caceres, of which the Torre del Bujaco is the most famous.

Spain, Community of Madrid region

CultureFoodNight lifeHistoric1 night

Madrid is where ancient and old meet modern and cosmopolitan, where sightseeing, dancing, and shopping go hand in hand.

Madrid is the capital of Spain and its largest city. As the capital city of Spain, seat of government, and residence of the Spanish monarch, Madrid is also the political, economic and cultural center of Spain. While Madrid possesses a modern infrastructure, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighborhoods and streets. Its landmarks include the Royal Palace of Madrid; the Royal Theater with its restored 1850 Opera House; the Buen Retiro park, founded in 1631; the 19th-century National Library building containing some of Spain's historical archives; a large number of National museums, and the Golden Triangle of Art, located along the Paseo del Prado.

Aix en Provence

France, Provence-Alpes-Cote D'Azur region

FoodNight lifeCultureHistoric1 night

Youthful and progressive, this town remains charming and provincial with its monuments, facades, and architecture from the past.

Aix-en-Provenc, or simply Aix, is a city commune in south of France. It is in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur. The population of Aix numbers approximately 143,000. The Cours Mirabeau is a wide thoroughfare, planted with double rows of plane-trees, bordered by fine houses and decorated by fountains. It follows the line of the old city wall and divides the town into two sections. The new town extends to the south and west; the old town, with its narrow, irregular streets and its old mansions dating from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, lies to the north.
