Nuremberg

Germany, Bavaria region

CultureHistoricFoodNight life2 nightsSun. Jun 16 - Tue. Jun 18

While commonly associated with the Third Reich, Nuremberg's history begins in the 11C, thus offering a wealth of varied sites.

Nuremberg was, according to the first documentary mention of the city in 1050, the location of a roman Imperial castle and is often referred to as having been the 'unofficial capital' of the Holy Roman Empire. Because of the city's relevance to the Holy Roman Empire and its position in the centre of Germany, the Nazi Party chose the city to be the site of huge Nazi Party conventions – the Nuremberg rallies. Between 1945 and 1946, German officials involved in war crimes and crimes against humanity were brought before an international tribunal in the Nuremberg Trials. Sites in Nuremberg include: Nuremberg Castle an Heilig-Geist-Spital, the largest hospital of the Middle Ages.

Cesky Krumlov

Czech Republic, South Bohemian region

Small townsHistoric2 nightsTue. Jun 18 - Thu. Jun 20

This storybook town is a must-see destination, boasting diverse and colorful architecture, a medieval castle, and a vibrant atmosphere.

Cesky Krumlov Castle is unusually large for a town of Krumlov's size; within the Czech Republic it is second in extent only to the Hradcany castle complex of Prague. Cesky Krumlov Castle preserves its Baroque theatre, built from 1680-82 under Prince Johann Christian I von Eggenberg and renovated with modern (at the time) stage equipment under Josef Adam zu Schwarzenberg from 1765-66. With this original stage machinery, scenery and props it is among only a few such court theatres that still exist. Krumlov has a museum dedicated to the painter Egon Schiele, who lived in the town.

The capital and the largest city in the Czech Republic, Prague boasts a magical cityscape, rich in history and culture.

Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, Prague has become one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. It is the fifth most visited European city after London, Paris, Istanbul and Rome. Prague suffered considerably less damage during World War II than some other major cities in the region, allowing most of its historic architecture to stay true to form. It contains one of the world's most pristine and varied collections of architecture, from Romanesque, to Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neo-Renaissance, Neo-Gothic, Art Nouveau, Cubist, Neo-Classical and ultra-modern.
