Famous for its wine, Portugal's second largest city boasts a lovely waterfront and several historical sites and monuments.

Porto is the second-largest city in Portugal, after Lisbon, and one of the major urban areas in Southern Europe. Porto is one of the oldest European centres, and registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Its settlement dates back many centuries, when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire. Its Latin name, Portus Cale has been referred to as the origin for the name "Portugal", based on transliteration and oral evolution from Latin. One of Portugal's internationally famous exports, port wine, is named for Porto, since the metropolitan area, and in particular the adegas of Vila Nova de Gaia, were responsible for the production and export of the fortified wine.

A lively town on the banks of the River Douro, the perfect starting place for exploring the Port Wine Route and the Douro Valley.

Vila Real has an elevation of 460 m. The Alvao and Marao mountains overlook the town on the North and West side, respectively, rising up to 1400 m. Vila Real was founded in 1289 by King Denis of Portugal, hence its name meaning Royal Town. It housed more members of the royal family during the Middle Ages than any other settlement in Portugal except the capital in Lisbon, and family Coats of Arms remain above old houses, some of which still occupied by those families. The town is home to several museums and historic sites, and surrounded by beautiful nature parks and even more historic sites.
