Magdeburg is situated on the Elbe River and was one of the most important medieval cities of Europe. Emperor Otto I, the first Holy Roman Emperor, was buried in the town's cathedral after his death. The Lutheran Cathedral of Saints Catherine and Maurice with a height of 104 m, the highest church building of eastern Germany. It is notable for its beautiful and unique sculptures.
