As university city, Eindhoven has a large student population, giving Eindhoven a young population, whose recreational needs are catered to by several different festivals and clubs. Eindhoven was also the main location of The Philips Company, who undertook a lot of effort in the "cultural formation" of its workforce and gave the city both cultural institutions and sporting institutions. Eindhoven is also known as the City of Light, due to the Company Philips originating there because of the several projects involving lighting up buildings of the city. During Carnival, Eindhoven is rechristened Lampegat (Hamlet of Lamps); referring to the important role of Philips in the Eindhoven community.

The city center contains old buildings and portions of the singels (moats) and the harbour. Focal point is the Grote Markt, the main square with pubs and sidewalk cafes. Park Valkenberg is a major public park. Major historic buildings include The Grote Kerk (Large Church) or Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk (Church of Our Lady), a major example of the Brabant style of Gothic Architecture; The Castle of Breda; The Begijnhof, a Beguinage, Saint Anthony's Cathedral (Sint-Antoniuskathedraal), the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Breda; City Hall; and The Spanjaardsgat, a 16th-century watergate. Breda is also home to several interesting and beautiful museums.

Oisterwijk is a municipality and a city in the South of the Netherlands. Oisterwijk received city rights in 1230. Part of the municipality of Oisterwijk includes the 'Oisterwijkse bossen en vennen' (Oisterwijk forest's and little lakes) and the 'Kampina'. Both are nature reserves of outstanding natural beauty. The reserves are owned and kept by the 'Vereniging Natuurmonumenten' (Nature Monuments Society).

Tilburg has some notable art in the city, and has an outstanding museum of Modern Art, De Pont Foundation. There is a large textile museum, offering not only a historical view in its former factory, but also a laboratorium for design, production and development of textile. Another museum is Noordbrabants Natuurmuseum. Several parks and forests provide people from Tilburg area recreation. Tilburg offers, in comparison to other top-ten cities in the Netherlands the most forest area. In the municipality, Tilburg has the Wandelbos, a forest. Out of the municipality, there's a national park called Loonse en Drunense Duinen which includes dunes of drift sand from the west coast.
