The Rocks, as the Sydney natives call the historic city center, was the shore where the first settlers of the city docked. Many of the settlers – prisoners who were exiled to this new penal colony – set up tents here as did many of the other immigrants who flocked here following rumors of the discovery of gold in Australia. The area became notorious during the 19th century as a center for poverty, neglect, prostitution, and crime.
