The city is located on the northwest coast of Borneo facing the South China Sea. The Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park lies to its west and Mount Kinabalu, which gave the city its name, is located to its east. Kota Kinabalu is often known as KK both in Malaysia and internationally. It is a major tourist destination and a popular gateway for travelers visiting Sabah and Borneo. Kinabalu Park is located about 90 km from the city and there are many other tourist attractions in and around the city.

Known for its fresh seafood, lovely beaches, and proximity to amazing nature, the city is also home to a culturally diverse population.

Sandakan, formerly known at various times as Elopura, is the second-largest town in Sabah after Kota Kinabalu City, on the north-eastern coast of Borneo in Malaysia. Several cultural venues are located in Sandakan. The Sandakan Heritage Museum is the main museum of Sandakan. Besides that, a cultural festival known as Sandakan Festival is celebrated once a year in the town, after having been introduced in 2000 by the Sandakan Municipal Council. A number of leisure spots and conservation areas are available around Sandakan. The Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary is a place where orphaned or injured orangutans are brought to be rehabilitated to return to forest life.

Destroyed during WWII, this city has been rebuilt and now attracts visitors interested in exploring the wealth of nearby nature.
