Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece, and is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning around 3,400 years and the earliest human presence around 11th–7th millennium BC,. The National Garden of Athens was completed in 1840 and is a green refuge in the centre of the Greek capital. Athens' largest zoo is the Attica Zoological Park, a private zoo located in the suburb of Spata. The zoo is home to around 2000 animals representing 400 species, and is open 365 days a year. The city is a world centre of archaeological research. Apart from national institutions there are several archaeological Museums, including the National Archaeological Museum.

Sofia is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria and is the 15th largest city in the European Union. The city is located at the foot of Vitosha Mountain in the western part of the country, within less than 50km drive from the Serbian border. Grado is a town and commune in the north-eastern Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, located on a peninsula of the Adriatic Sea between Venice and Trieste. Once mainly a fishing center, today it is a popular tourist destination, known commonly as L'Isola del Sole ("The Sunny Island"), also famous because it is also a spa town; together with Marano Lagunare, it is the center of the Marano-Grado Lagoon, which is famous for its uncontaminated nature. Today there are frequent finds of inscriptions, sarcophagi, marble sculpture and small bronzes that once furnished its villas. The remains of one of these villas has been excavated on the islet of Gorgo in the lagoon.
