Spain Navarre

Pamplona or Iruna is the historical capital city of Navarre, in Spain, and of the former Kingdom of Navarre. The city is famous worldwide for the San Fermin festival, from July 6 to 14, in which the running of the bulls is one of the main attractions. This festival was brought to literary renown with the 1926 publication of Ernest Hemingway's novel The Sun Also Rises. The most important religious building is the fourteenth century Gothic Cathedral, with an outstanding cloister and a Neoclassical facade.

Olite is a town and municipality located in the province of Navarre, northern Spain. According to Isidore of Seville's, the town of Oligicus was founded by Swinthila, Visigothic King of Hispania in order to control and punish the Vascones. However, this town was not heard of again until five centuries later, when the present-day town was founded and chartered. The Palacio Real de Olite, a fine Gothic castle-palace, was the royal seat of Charles III of Navarre.

Estella is a town located in the autonomous community of Navarre, in northern Spain. The town was founded in 1090 when the place, lying by the fortified settlement of Lizarra, was granted a charter by the Pamplonese king Sancho Ramirez. The town became a landmark in the Way of St. James pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, thriving on the privileged location and the melting pot of Francos called in by Navarrese kings, Jews and the original Navarrese inhabitants. The wealth resulted in a development of Romanesque architecture, well represented in the town: Church of San Pedro de la Rúa, Palacio de los Reyes de Navarra, Church of San Miguel, among others.

Tudela is a municipality in Spain. The poet Al-Tutili, the 12th century traveller Benjamin of Tudela, the 13th century writer William of Tudela and the physician and theologian Michael de Villanueva (true name of Servetus) were from the city. Of note are the city's festivals in honor of Santa Ana (St. Anne, mother of Mary) which begin on 24 July at noon and continue for approximately one week. Street music, bullfights and the running of the bulls are events which exemplify this festival.

Roncesvalles is a small village and municipality in Navarre, northern Spain. It is situated on the small river Urrobi at an altitude of some 900 meters in the Pyrenees. Roncesvalles is famous in history and legend for the defeat of Charlemagne and the death of Roland in 778, during the battle of Roncevaux Pass, when Charlemagne's rear guard was destroyed by Basque tribes. Every year thousands of pilgrims begin their way to Santiago de Compostela at Roncesvalles.
