Frankfurt

Germany, Hesse region

CultureNight lifeFood2 nights

Frankfurt Am Main, less than 40 km from the Rhine, is first and foremost the financial center of Germany. The Frankfurt Stock Exchange, more than 400 years old, was established in 1585. Frankfurt’s modern skyline with its many skyscrapers is what gave it the moniker: "Mainhatten” which is obviously a portmanteau of the two words (Main, the river and New York’s Manhattan). These tall buildings makes for a most impressive modern “skyscraper skytline” with its own “twin towers” of the Deutsche Bank, the Eurotower etc.  Occasionally, there is a (free) Skyscraper Festival – so keep your eyes and ears open and perhaps there will be one this year or next year!

A major financial hub since the 16C, Frankfurt seamlessly combines modern skyscrapers with genuine historic charm.

Germany, Saxony region

CultureHistoricNight lifeFood2 nights

Dresden is a city in Saxony, Germany. It is situated in a valley on the River Elbe, near the Czech border. Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendor. The city was known as the Jewel Box, because of its baroque and rococo city center. After world war II restoration work has helped to reconstruct parts of the historic inner city, including the Katholische Hofkirche, the Semper Oper and the Dresdner Frauenkirche.

Despite heavy bombing during WWII, still evident today, Dresden is an exquisite Baroque-laden city with wonderful attractions.

Trier

Germany, The Moselle Valley region

HistoricCultureNight life2 nights

Trier is most probably the oldest town in Germany, founded in 16 BC during the reign of Roman Emperor Augustus. The river Moselle creates borders as it flows through three countries – France in the north-east, Germany in the south-west and Luxembourg in the east. It empties in Belgium – a fourth country! Trier, from Roman times, has always been the seat of a bishop and is one of the oldest dioceses in all of Germany. A tour of the city brings us in touch with marvelous historical monuments. The city is home to one of the oldest universities – yet one of the youngest! How can that be you ask? In 1473 the University was founded but closed in 1798 and in 1970 a new university was founded in its stead.

Trier (formerly known in English as Trèves or Triers) is without a doubt the queen of the Moselle Valley.

Passau is a town in Lower Bavaria, Germany. It is also known as the "City of Three Rivers," because the Danube is joined at Passau by the Inn from the south and the Ilz from the north. With 17,774 pipes and 233 registers, the organ at St. Stephen's was long held to be the largest church pipe organ in the world and is today second in size only to the organ at First Congregational Church, Los Angeles. Organ concerts are held daily between May and September. St.Stephen's is a true masterpiece of Italian Baroque. Many river cruises down the Danube start at Passau and there is a cycling path all the way down to Vienna. It is also notable for its gothic and baroque architecture.

This exquisite 2,500-year-old town is a historical gem at the confluence of the Danube, Ilz, and Inn Rivers.
