Thanks to 6km of arcades, the town boasts 1 of the longest covered shopping promenades in Europe. Since 16C, the city has a bear pit to house its heraldic animals. The Federal Palace, built 1857-1902 can also be visited. The Rose Garden is a Rosarium on a hill, converted into a park from a former cemetery. There are Renaissance allegorical statues on public fountains in the Old Town.

Carcassonne is a fortified French town in the Aude department. It is divided into the fortified Cite de Carcassonne and the more expansive lower city, the ville basse. Carcassone's fortress, which was thoroughly restored in 1853 by the theorist and architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc, was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997.

This town is not to be missed with its impressive and extremely well-preserved citadel, as well as its abundance of history.
