Kalabaka is a municipality in the Trikala regional unit, part of Thessaly in Greece. The town is situated on the foot of the Meteora peaks, and is known for the Meteora monasteries are located in the town. The town was built on the location of the ancient city of Aiginion and of its medieval monuments, only the cathedral, the Church of the Dormition, survives. Relics of an ancient Greek temple – probably of god Apollo – have been incorporated in the wall of the town’s oldest and most renowned church, dedicated to Virgin Mary.

The idyllic surroundings of the town have a complex of white washed blue domed churches and charming, traditional Cycladic houses and cave houses that are carved into the rock face on top of the cliff. It is set in a location which provides excellent views of the sunset over the caldera. To the southwest is the Bay of Armeni, reachable from the town on foot or by mule. Excursion boats for trips around the island and ferries to Therasia leave from here.
