The Rocks, as the Sydney natives call the historic city center, was the shore where the first settlers of the city docked. Many of the settlers – prisoners who were exiled to this new penal colony – set up tents here as did many of the other immigrants who flocked here following rumors of the discovery of gold in Australia. The area became notorious during the 19th century as a center for poverty, neglect, prostitution, and crime.

The Taronga Zoo, located in the northern part of Sydney on the shores of the Sydney Harbour, is one of the most beautiful and well-known zoos in the world. The zoo is built on a mountainside in the suburb of Mosman with spectacular views of the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. The zoo is easily accessible via a 12-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay.

Near Darling Harbor and Chinatown, you will find one of the city's best and most contemporary museums - the Powerhouse Museum, also known as the Powerhouse Ultimo. As its name implies, the museum is located in a huge building which was used for many years as the city's central power station until the municipal tram service ceased in 1961.

The Sydney Tower, the tallest building in the city and the second tallest observation tower in the Southern Hemisphere, is a Sydney icon offering breathtaking 360 degree views from its observation deck. Ride up the high-speed elevator at the Sydney Tower Eye for less than a minute, and you will be at close to 820 feet -on clear days, you can even see as far as the Blue Mountains towering far to the west!

It is actually an impressive Georgian-style colonial mansion- a style that was adored by the wealthy in Sydney in the early 19th century- and is one of the few mansions that has survived from this period complete with its garden and original furniture. The beauty of the house made it a popular venue for weddings.

Want to learn more about the Aboriginal "dreamtime" – the important features of Aboriginal spiritual beliefs such as the time of the creation of the universe for the natives? The Museum of Contemporary Art at Circular Quay, on the edge of Sydney Harbour, is definitely the place for you.

About a half-mile walk from The Rocks, perched on Observatory Hill - the highest point above the bay - stands the Sydney Observatory.

The Rocks, a neighborhood of historic alleyways near the Sydney Harbour Bridge, bustles with shops, open-air markets selling street food and handmade fashion, upscale restaurants, and some of Sydney’s oldest pubs. In the heart of this now-thriving entertainment district stands the Susannah Place Museum- a hidden treasure which provides an authentic glimpse into the origins of the area.

The Sydney Jewish Museum is a modern, first-rate museum located in the Sydney suburb of Darlinghurst. The museum’s tagline is, "Where history has a voice,” and it is designed to be a living museum which both commemorates and educates.

Take the train from Sydney to the Olympic Park and visit the stadium where the opening and closing ceremonies of the "Millennium Games" were held – there are guided Segway tours available or you can explore on your own by bike on the park’s many paths. 

What’s a trip to Australia without meeting its most famous character – the kangaroo? 
At the famous Wild Life Sydney Zoo, you can meet kangaroos along with a large variety of other animals. One of two zoos in the city (the other is Taronga Zoo), it was opened in 2006 and is located in Darling Harbour near the Sea Life Aquarium. 

Visit the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in Darling Harbour next to the aquarium – suitable for both kids and adults.

The Bahá'í Temple is located in Ingleside, a northern suburb of Sydney, at the top of a range of hills overlooking the Tasman Sea. The gardens surrounding the temple contain plants that are native to Australia and are designed to create a sense of calm for visitors and followers.
