Bialystok is the largest city in northeastern Poland and the capital of the Podlaskie Voivodeship. Located in the Bialystok Uplands on the banks of the Biala River, Bialystok ranks second in terms of population density, eleventh in population, and thirteenth in area, of the cities of Poland. Bialystok has traditionally been one of the leading centers of academic and artistic life in Podlaskie, and serves as one of the largest cultural centers in the Voivodeship. The attractions include the Branicki Palace, the Orthodox Cathedral, art and historical museums, various performance groups, and a wide variety of parks and green spaces.
